So yes it is 99% of the time an exceptional program, but there are SOME holes that products like Adobe take advantage of when calling home. A quick hosts edit solves that if you don't want any background traffic from your apps.

A proper config could easily fix that. Either whitelist certain devices for unrestricted access. Or blacklist devices to have to obey the config parameters. And then parameters for which ports and destinations things should be allowed access to on a per device level...

Conventional firewalls like the built-in firewall in Mac OS X base their rules only on Internet addresses and port numbers, not on application names. This makes them mostly useful for filtering incoming connections because services listen on well known port numbers.
However, anyone who runs, Microsoft CRM, SugarCRM, Netsuite, etc. - are all used to hearing "Sorry, we don't integrate with X". I'd say ubuntu falls into a similar category....
